Google's documentation is clear that there is no separate system to game: "The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems." Its AI features can run a "query fan-out", issuing several related searches across subtopics, which lets them link a wider and more varied set of pages than a classic results page.
That may be why the overlap with the organic top ten varies so much by study and by date. Ahrefs found 76% of cited pages ranked in the top ten in July 2025, but only about 38% after Gemini 3 in March 2026. BrightEdge put the share from the top ten at 16.7% in September 2025. No single figure is "the" answer, which is why we measure the pages cited for your own phrases instead of assuming.
Google also says what does not matter. "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." It needs no special schema and no AI text files, and on llms.txt it is blunt: "Doing so will neither harm nor help your site's visibility or rankings in Google Search, as Google Search ignores them." Its hiring advice even asks whether an AEO or GEO provider's advice follows Google's own guidance. AI Mode, one of the two features in that first quote, does not count toward the first page guarantee.
Business Profile data can end up in the answer itself. In one national check of "near me seo" on September 27, 2026, Google's AI Overview named two of the three businesses in the map results, with their star ratings and review counts, and linked neither. It is a single observation, but it shows why the profile and the website have to agree.
