A customer who needs you types a few words into Google and picks from what the first page shows. The clicks gather at the top. In Advanced Web Ranking's study of US desktop results for July 2026, the first organic result had an average click-through rate of 20.02%, the second 10.36% and the third 3.89%, and the first three together took roughly 92% of the clicks that reached the top ten.
Past page one, the clicks nearly stop. In Backlinko's data (revised 2022), only 0.63% of Google searchers clicked anything on the second page. Sistrix measured under 1% for every result on page two.
Page one does not arrive on its own, either. Ahrefs followed a million random new pages and found that only 1.74% reached the top ten within a year. And the page is crowded: Advanced Web Ranking found AI Overviews, the AI answers Google shows above the results, on 43% of sampled desktop results pages in July 2026, and where one appeared, the first organic result's click rate fell by 52%.
Nobody can buy their way into these results. Google says it "never accepts money to include or rank sites in our search results". Page one is earned, page by page and phrase by phrase, and a business that is not there is handing those customers to the competitors who are.
