How to Rank Higher on Google Maps

What Google says decides Google Maps rankings, what the 2026 expert survey scores highest, and the fixes that move a Business Profile: categories, name and address rules, hours, reviews and proximity.

On this page

To rank higher on Google Maps, make your Business Profile the most relevant match for each search, build the prominence Google can see, and stop anything that breaks its rules. You can't change how far a searcher is from you, so measure rankings across the whole area you serve and win relevance and prominence everywhere you can.

The short answer

Direct answer

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and popularity, explaining the third factor under the heading "Prominence" [1]. It says businesses with complete, accurate info are more likely to show, and that links, reviews and ratings feed prominence [1]. Distance you can't change, and you can't buy any of it: Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking [1].

In a live check on September 27, 2026 of 12 commercial searches made from Las Vegas, such as "dentist", "chiropractor" and "garage door repair", Google showed a local pack for 11; only "plastic surgeon" had none [3]. In that sample, nearly every local service search put the map results on the page. The wider picture is in our guide to local SEO.

What Google says decides map rankings

Direct answer

Three things, in Google's words. Relevance is "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for". Distance is how far each business is from the searcher, and Google uses what it knows about their location when they don't share it. Prominence draws on how many websites link to the business and how many reviews it has [1]. Complete, accurate profiles are more likely to show [1].

Google rewrote this page in mid-2025. The version captured in June 2025 also said your position in web results was a factor in local ranking, and that line is gone [4]. Advice that still quotes it is out of date.

Two more Google statements shape everything below. Your location is applied even when a search names no place at all [5]. And the categories you select affect your local ranking [6].

The leading local SEO ranking factors in the 2026 expert survey

Direct answer

Whitespark's 2026 survey asked 47 local search experts to score 187 factors [7]. For the local pack, the highest-scored were the primary category, proximity to the searcher, keywords in the business title, a physical address in the city searched, being open at the time of the search and high star ratings [7]. It measures expert opinion, not Google's code, so treat it as informed guidance.

RankFactor (Whitespark's wording)ScoreWhat to do
1Primary GBP Category227Choose the most specific category that says what you are
2Proximity of Address to the Point of Search225You can't move it; measure across your area
3Keywords in GBP Business Title223Check it against the businesses in the pack
4Physical Address in City of Search213List a real address where you meet customers
5Business is Open at Time of Search189Keep regular and special hours accurate
6High Numerical Google Ratings181Ask every customer for an honest review
7Address Is Showing on GBP (Not SAB)176Show it only if customers come to you
8Additional GBP Categories173Add only true, core categories
9Quantity of Native Google Reviews (w/text)170Let customers describe the service in their own words
10Proper Placement of the Map Pin165Check the pin sits on your real location

One caution. Being open at the time of the search is Sterling Sky's observation, first reported in December 2023, not a factor Google has confirmed [9]. Whitespark adds that rankings can start to drop off about 60 minutes before you close, and warns any business customers can visit never to list hours other than its real ones [7].

Categories and address rules

Direct answer

Pick the primary category that best describes the business, add few others, and never use categories as keywords [6][8]. List a real address where you meet customers: Google says virtual offices and remote P.O. boxes don't qualify for a Business Profile [8].

Our guide to Google Business Profile categories covers the category choice in detail.

Hours are the quiet factor. Google asks for your regular customer-facing hours, and says businesses that operate only by appointment shouldn't list hours [8]. Use special hours for short closures, such as holidays, of up to 6 days in a row [10].

Service-area businesses play by different rules. Google tells them to hide their address from customers and keep their service area within about two hours' drive of where they are based [8]. They can set up to 20 service areas by city or postal code, but not a radius [11]. Our Google Business Profile optimization guide walks through every field.

Reviews: count, rating, recency

Direct answer

Reviews are the second-heaviest group in Whitespark's local pack weighting, behind Business Profile signals [7]. In the same survey, high ratings ranked sixth, review quantity ninth and recency eleventh [7]. Sterling Sky's correlational study of 8,186 businesses in 200 US cities found the reviews gained this month mattered more than the total [12]. Collect them steadily, and only from real customers.

Google agrees in its own words: "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking." [1] It also bans offering incentives for reviews and asking only happy customers [13], and since April 2026 it can pause new reviews on a profile and show a notification banner when reviews spike [14]. The details are in do Google reviews help SEO and how to get more Google reviews.

Proximity: what you can and can't change

Direct answer

You can't move your customers. Google measures distance from the searcher and uses what it knows about their location when they don't share it [1], and it localizes results even when a search names no place [5]. What you can do is make the profile the strongest match within reach: an accurate address and pin, the right categories, and a website page for each service.

Proximity may have grown heavier. In a post quoted by BrightLocal, Google confirmed a local update that ran from November 30 to December 8, 2021, calling it a rebalancing of various factors; the industry named it "Vicinity" [15]. Sterling Sky's reading is that it made proximity weigh more [16]. Searches that carry an implied location, like the ones in our guide to near me searches, depend on it too.

The screen is also more crowded. Sterling Sky found that during 2025, ads in the local pack went from 1% of its reports to almost 22%, and Local Services Ads from about 11% of its tracked queries to 31% by November [17]. Google also shows AI local packs on some searches: on US mobile they appeared for about 7% of the keywords Sterling Sky tracked, surfacing only about 32% as many businesses as a 3-pack [17].

Measuring map rankings across your area

Direct answer

One search from your desk shows one point on the map. Because Google ranks by the searcher's location, check each phrase from several points across the area you serve, on the device your customers use, and repeat the same points every time [1][18]. Rank-grid tools do this for the map results only; AI answers need separate checks.

Add Google's own data. A verified profile's Performance report lists the search terms people used to find your business, updated at the start of each month, and includes activity from Google Ads [19]. It tells you which searches find you, not where you rank, so use it to choose the phrases you track. Our guide on how to check Google rankings covers the tools and the traps.

Checklist: how to rank on Google Maps

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

Google gives no timeline for map rankings. For Search in general, its starter guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks to assess [20]. The real answer depends on your gap to the businesses already in the 3-pack: a wrong category can be corrected in minutes, while a review or link gap takes months to close.

Why did my Google Maps ranking drop?

Possible causes: a category edit that triggered re-verification [6]; hours that show you closed when people search [7]; a stall in new reviews, since recent reviews mattered more than the total in Sterling Sky's study [12]; a name, address or phone change; a suspension; or a Google update. Check too whether you searched from a different spot, since Google ranks by the searcher's location [1].

Can I rank in the 3-pack outside my city?

It's hard for a storefront: proximity and a physical address in the city searched are two of the survey's four highest-scored factors [7]. Service-area businesses can list up to 20 service areas, but Google says they shouldn't extend beyond about two hours' drive [8][11]. To reach further, organic pages do more of the work; in the same survey, on-page factors and links lead local organic rankings [7].

Do Business Profile posts help map rankings?

Not by the experts' reading: Whitespark's survey rates the quantity of Google posts a ranking myth [7]. Posts older than six months are archived unless you set a date range [21]. Use posts for what they do well, telling customers about offers, events and updates, and put your ranking effort into categories, reviews, accuracy and your website.

Maps are one of three places

The map results are the first of the three places our first page guarantee measures, and the one where a profile's details matter most. The guarantee is offered after an assessment, for a phrase list agreed in writing, and its page-one share is measured separately in each of the three places: the map results, the organic results and Google's AI answers, where the share counts only the phrases that show one at the check.
