How to Check Your Google Rankings Accurately

Why two people see different Google results, what Search Console's average position really means, how to check map results across your area and AI answers phrase by phrase, and how first page milestones are checked.

On this page

Check rankings from the place your customers search, on the device they use, and read Search Console's average position as an average, not a snapshot. For the map results, check from several points across your area; for AI answers, first record whether Google shows one at all, then whether it names or links your business.

The short answer

Direct answer

There is no single "your ranking". Google says its results depend on many signals, including the words of the query and the searcher's location and settings [1]. To check accurately, use Search Console for your average position across real searches, a location-set check for specific phrases, a grid of points for the map results, and a dated capture of the results page for AI answers.

A quick search on your own phone tells you what you see, not what your customers see. Rank-tracking tools and keyword rank checkers help, with one caveat from Google itself: third-party SEO tools don't have access to Google's internal ranking data [2]. Every tool is running searches and recording what comes back, which is useful, but it is a sample, not Google's own numbers.

Why two people see different results

Direct answer

Because Google personalizes and localizes. It uses information such as your location, past Search history and Search settings to decide what is most relevant to you [1], and relevance can depend on the device, desktop or phone [3]. Two people in different neighborhoods, or on different devices, can see different pages and different map results for the same words.

Location applies even when nobody types a place: Google uses your location to show nearby results even if you didn't include a location in your search [4]. For the map results, distance is measured from the searcher, and Google uses what it knows about their location when they don't share it [5]. That is why our guide to near me searches spends so long on where the searcher stands.

National checks mislead for local businesses. In one national capture for "near me seo", Google's local pack included a French agency [6]. A customer searching from your city would likely see a different pack.

Search Console: average position explained

Direct answer

Search Console's position is the topmost position your link held in each search, averaged across all the searches where your site appeared [7]. Google warns that your own search may differ from that average because of history and location [7]. Results on pages nobody viewed are not recorded [7], and an AI Overview counts as one position shared by every link inside it [7].

Read the average carefully. A page that shows near the top for nearby searchers and deep in the results for everyone else reports a middling average that matches nobody's actual view. Look at impressions and clicks beside it; Search Console defines click-through rate as clicks divided by impressions [7].

Google's AI features sit inside the same report. Traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in the Performance report under the "Web" search type [8]. A click on an external link in AI Mode counts as a click, and a follow-up question in AI Mode counts as a new query [7]. Since June 3, 2026, Search Console also has generative AI performance reports, rolled out to all websites by August 31, 2026, which show how often your URLs appeared in generative AI features, as impressions [9].

Where you sit on page one still matters for clicks:

Checking map results from the right location

Direct answer

Map rankings change from place to place, because Google measures distance from the searcher [5]. Check each phrase from several points across the area you serve, not from your office, and repeat the same points on the same device every time. Grid-based rank trackers do this for the map results only; AI answers need their own checks.

To check another city, use a rank tracker that sets the search location to points across that city. Keep the grid the same size and spacing from one check to the next, or the comparison means nothing.

Add Google's first-party view. A verified Business Profile's Performance report lists the search terms people used to find the business, updated at the start of each month, and includes activity from Google Ads [11]. It tells you which searches find you, not where you rank, so use it to pick the phrases your grid tracks. Our guide on how to rank higher on Google Maps covers what to do with the results.

Checking AI Overviews and AI answers

Direct answer

First record whether Google shows an AI Overview for the phrase at all: Google says they appear only when its systems judge them additive and "often don't trigger" [8]. In a September 2026 check of 12 commercial phrases searched from Las Vegas, only 2 had one [12]. When one appears, record whether it names or links your business, with the date and place of the check.

One capture shows why "names or links" matters. For "near me seo", Google's AI Overview named two businesses with their star ratings and review counts, and linked neither [6]. A check that only looks for links would have missed both.

AI answers also shift between runs. In SE Ranking's study of AI Mode, only 9.2% of URLs matched across three tests [13], and Ahrefs found only 13.7% of citations overlap between AI Overviews and AI Mode [14]. So date every capture, keep the location fixed, and repeat. Google's own warning applies here too: "No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems." [15]

Other assistants can be watched as channels. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its referral links [16], and Bing Webmaster Tools has reported how often content is cited in AI answers since February 10, 2026 [17].

How each first page milestone is checked (the written terms)

Direct answer

Under our written terms, on each milestone date we search every phrase on the agreed list from the agreed market, record where the business shows up and send the results. A report can be requested at any time and is run within ten days. The share is measured separately in each of the three places: the map results, the first ten organic results and Google's AI answer.

The milestones are at least 20% on page one by day 90, 40% by day 180 and 50%+ by the end of the first year, with the share measured separately in each of the three places. The share is a plain count: in the map and organic results, phrases that show divided by phrases on the list; in AI answers, phrases that show divided by the phrases for which Google shows an AI answer at the check. It is not the "share of voice" rank trackers report, which Ahrefs weights by clicks [18] and Semrush by each keyword's search volume and estimated traffic [19]. Searches for the client's own business name don't count, and each phrase counts once in each place.

Google shows an AI answer for only some searches, as the Las Vegas check above found [12], so no one can promise one for every phrase. Our written guarantee terms define how the AI share is measured, and if a client sees something different from our report, we check it again together. What the check never records is a promised position:

“No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.”

Google Search Central, “Do you need an SEO?” [2]

Our first page guarantee promises no position, only an agreed share on page one, checked on set dates. Read how an SEO guarantee works for the reasoning behind a first page promise.

Checklist: an accurate ranking check

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Google ranking different on my phone?

Because results depend on more than the words you type. Google says relevance can depend on the device, desktop or phone [3], and it uses your location, past Search history and settings to decide what's most relevant to you [1]. Your phone is also often somewhere other than your desk. Check with a fixed location and device to compare like with like.

Is Search Console average position accurate?

It is an accurate average of what happened, not a snapshot. Google computes it from the topmost position your link held in each search where you appeared, averaged across those searches, and warns that your own search may differ because of history and location [7]. Results on pages nobody viewed aren't recorded at all [7]. Read it next to impressions and clicks.

How do I check map rankings for another city?

Check from that city, not from your office. Google measures distance from the searcher and uses what it knows about their location when it isn't shared [5], so a check from the wrong place shows the wrong 3-pack. Use a rank tracker or SERP checker that sets the search location to points across that city, and repeat the same points each time.

Can I see whether I appear in AI Overviews?

Partly. Search Console includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in its Performance report under "Web" [8], and its generative AI report, on all sites since August 31, 2026, shows impressions [9]. For what an answer actually says, capture the results page for each phrase from your market and record whether it names or links your business.

How often should rankings be checked?

Monthly is enough for most businesses. Google's own guidance is to wait a few weeks to assess whether a change had an effect [20], and the Business Profile's search terms update at the start of each month [11]. Check the same phrases, places and devices each time. Under our written terms, milestone checks run on set dates, with a report available on request in between.

Measured the same way every time

Accurate, repeatable checks are the backbone of our first page guarantee, which is offered after an assessment and measured separately in each of the three places. The same checks measure the businesses you compete with, as our guide to SEO competitor analysis explains. A free SEO audit of your website is the easiest first step.
