Organic Click-Through Rates on Page One: What the Studies Show
Most organic clicks go to the first three results, page two gets almost none, and AI Overviews cut clicks further. What each major CTR study measured, and what it means for a first page goal.
On this page
Most organic clicks on Google go to the first three results, and page two gets almost none. In Advanced Web Ranking's July 2026 data for Google US desktop, the first organic result averaged a 20.02% click-through rate, the second 10.36% and the third 3.89%, and the first three took roughly 92% of the clicks that reached the top ten [1].
The short answer
Direct answer
Organic click-through rate falls fast down page one. In AWR's July 2026 US desktop data, the first three results collected about 92% of the clicks that reached the top ten [1]. Page two earns under 1% per result in the studies measuring it [2][3]. Where AI Overviews appear, studies link them to fewer organic clicks [4][5]. Page one is the entry point; the top of it is where the clicks are.
That is a fair challenge to any first page goal, ours included. This article takes it head on: what the major studies measured, how AI answers changed the picture, and why showing up in more than one place on the results page matters.
What Google CTR by position means, and its limits
Direct answer
Click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions. "CTR by position" averages that ratio for each spot on the results page across many searches. It is an average over very different pages: the layout, the search intent, the industry and AI answers all move it. Treat any single figure as a benchmark with a wide range, not a forecast for your page.
Google's Search Console defines CTR as "(clicks ÷ impressions)", reports position as the topmost spot a site's link held, and counts an AI Overview as a single position shared by every link inside it [10]. The benchmarks then vary widely:
- Layout. Sistrix found the first result's CTR ranged from 13.7% to 46.9% depending on the page layout, and that search intent shapes the layout, and so how many organic clicks exist [3].
- Industry. In AWR's July 2026 US data across all devices, the first result's CTR ran from 12.2% in Law, Government & Politics to 31.2% in Arts & Entertainment, with Health & Fitness near the bottom at 13.3% [1].
If you run a law firm or a health practice, expect your clicks to sit below the all-industry averages.
What the major studies measured (method first)
Direct answer
The major CTR studies measure different things, so compare them by method and date, never as one blended number. AWR estimates CTR across more than 1.75 million US results pages a month (July 2026) [1]. Backlinko's figures come from Search Console data covering 12,166,560 queries (a 2022 revision) [2]. Sistrix used partner Search Console data for more than 80 million keywords (2020) [3].
| Study (date) | Data | First result | Second | Third | Other findings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AWR (July 2026, US desktop) | CTR estimates on 1.75M+ US results pages a month | 20.02% | 10.36% | 3.89% | The first three take about 92% of top-ten clicks [1] |
| Backlinko (data revised 2022) | Search Console data via Semrush, 1,312,881 pages | 27.6% | n/a | n/a | The first three take 54.4% of all clicks; the first is 10 times likelier to be clicked than the tenth [2] |
| Sistrix (2020) | Partner Search Console data, 80M+ keywords | 28.5% | 15.7% | 11% | The tenth result gets 2.5% [3] |
Two findings deserve plain statement. First, the top of page one holds its value better than the middle. Over a decade, AWR puts the first result at 29.3% in 2015 and 25.8% in 2025, down 12%, while the second result lost 40% of its CTR, the third 44% and results four to ten 44% to 47% [1]. Even the top is under pressure: over the latest twelve months the first result averaged 20.9%, against 28.0% the twelve months before (US, all devices) [1].
Second, Backlinko found that moving up a single position increases relative CTR by 32.3% [2], and its authors wrote that "ranking on the first page" may not be a worthy SEO goal [2]. We take that seriously. Page one is where clicks become possible; the first few results are where most of them happen. A first page result is the floor, not the finish.
How AI Overviews changed organic clicks
Direct answer
When Google shows an AI Overview, fewer people click the organic results below it. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one [4]. Ahrefs found an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average CTR for the top-ranking page [5]. Google disputes such studies and says organic clicks have been relatively stable [8].
Each study, with its method and date:
- Pew Research Center (browsing data from 900 US adults, March 2025; published July 22, 2025). Beyond the 8% and 15%, users clicked a link inside the AI summary on just 1% of visits [4].
- Ahrefs (300,000 keywords, desktop Search Console data; published February 4, 2026). Beyond the 58% correlation, Ahrefs reports that the first result's CTR on AI Overview keywords fell from 7.3% in December 2023 to 1.6% in December 2025, and the effect shrinks down the page, to 19.4% lower at the tenth result [5].
- Advanced Web Ranking (July 2026, US desktop). AI Overviews appeared on 43% of sampled results pages and cut the first result's CTR by 52%, from 20.02% to 9.69% [1].
- Seer Interactive (its own clients' data). Across 3,119 search terms at 42 organizations, organic CTR on informational queries with an AI Overview fell from 1.76% in June 2024 to 0.61% in September 2025 [6]. Its April 2026 update (53 brands, 5.47 million queries) saw a partial rebound, from 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026, and found brands cited in the AI Overview got 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited ones, though still 38% fewer than on queries with no AI Overview [7]. Seer says it cannot prove the citation causes the higher CTR [6].
- Google (August 6, 2025). Google's head of Search wrote that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites "has been relatively stable year-over-year", and called third-party reports of dramatic declines inaccurate. The post published no underlying data [8].
AI Overviews also don't appear everywhere: Pew found an AI summary on 18% of the searches in its March 2025 sample [4]. For how they pick the pages they cite, read how AI Overviews choose sources.
Page two and beyond
Direct answer
The second page of Google gets almost no clicks. Backlinko's data, revised in 2022, found only 0.63% of searchers clicked something on page two [2]. Sistrix measured well under 1% CTR for every page-two position [3]. AWR's July 2026 US desktop data shows results 11 to 20 earning between 0.27% and 0.88%, about the same as results seven to ten [1].
In AWR's table, results seven to ten earned 0.46 to 0.58% [1]. Read together, these figures suggest the real drop comes after the first few results, not at the bottom of page one. There is a measurement catch too: if your result sits on a page the searcher never opens, it gets no impression, so Search Console records nothing for that search [10]. A page-two ranking can look like no data at all, which is why how to check Google rankings starts with checking from your market.
Why presence in three places matters
Direct answer
Clicks concentrate at the top of each list, and a local search can show several lists on one page: the map results, the organic results and sometimes an AI answer. Showing up in more than one gives a searcher more than one chance to find you. In Seer's 2026 data, being cited in an AI Overview was linked to 120% more organic clicks per impression [7].
When we checked 12 commercial searches from Las Vegas on September 27, 2026, the map results appeared on 11, organic results on all 12 and an AI Overview on 2. In that small sample, a local business competed in two lists on almost every search and three on a few. We found no current, independent study of how many clicks the map results take, so treat any single figure for it with care. The differences between the two main lists are covered in local SEO vs organic SEO.
That is why our first page guarantee counts each of the three places separately, and why it never promises a position, clicks or traffic. It measures presence on page one: in the map results, in the organic results and in Google's AI answer. The organic SEO work toward the top of each list carries on from there, and how long SEO takes to work sets out the timing.
Checklist: reading your own click-through rates
Frequently asked questions
What is a good organic click-through rate?
There is no single good number, because CTR depends on your position, the page layout and your industry [1][3]. As a benchmark, AWR's July 2026 US desktop data put the first organic result at 20.02% and the third at 3.89% [1]. Compare your own Search Console CTR for a query with the benchmark for the position you hold, and expect lower figures in law and health [1].
How many people click past page one?
Very few. Backlinko's data, revised in 2022, found only 0.63% of searchers clicked a result on the second page [2]. Sistrix measured under 1% CTR for each page-two position [3], and AWR's July 2026 desktop data shows results 11 to 20 earning between 0.27% and 0.88% [1]. If a phrase matters to your business, page one is the minimum.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Independent studies say yes, when they appear. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one [4], and Ahrefs found an AI Overview correlated with a 58% lower average CTR for the top-ranking page [5]. Google disputes such findings and says organic clicks have been relatively stable [8]. AI Overviews appear on only some searches [4].
What is a zero-click search?
A search that ends without a click to any website. SparkToro's 2024 study, based on Datos clickstream data, found 58.5% of US Google searches ended with zero clicks, and only 360 of every 1,000 US searches sent a click to the open web [9]. In AWR's July 2026 data, 74.3% of results pages with an AI Overview ended without an organic click, against 53.6% without one [1].
Does the map pack take clicks from organic results?
Probably, but we found no current, independent study that measures it. What the data do show is that the page layout sets how many organic clicks exist [3], and that in our Las Vegas check, 11 of 12 commercial searches showed map results. The practical answer is to be in both lists.
Aim for page one, then for the top of it
Page one is where clicks become possible, and the top of each list is where most of them happen.
